Discovery
In a review of the book Cryptozoology: Searching for Hidden Animals by
Roy Mackel, Michael Schuyler addresses the concept that unknown animals are common but live in uninhabited areas, allowing them to escape scientific discovery. It is very possible that this concept is realistic. If you think of the number of animals you have learned about, but not actually seen with your own eyes, it allows for a sense of perspective.
Alton Higgins discusses a similar approach from the book The Discovery
of Sasquatch: Reconciling Culture, History, an Science in the Discovery Process by John A. Bindernagel. This approach considers the idea that sasquatch has been discovered without evidence or represents a previously discovered creature. It is possible that the correct procedures for documenting evidence were not followed due to who made the discovery or that sasquatch is a creature we have already discovered. If sasquatch represents a known creature, we would not recgonize his presence as anything but a regular sighting of a creature we already know.
